After a record-breaking June heatwave, temperatures are set to climb again next weekend, with weather maps turning red as the mercury approaches 30C in parts of the UK. The end of the scorching June heatwave will bring cooler conditions from Sunday, June 29, offering relief to many, but the respite will be short-lived.
Cooler Week Ahead Before Temperatures Rise Again
This week, temperatures will return to more comfortable levels closer to the expected average for the time of year. However, things are set to warm up again from Sunday, July 5. By Monday, July 6, the mercury is expected to climb to around 30C in London and the South East, while the West Midlands will see temperatures of approximately 27C that afternoon. Sunday, July 5, will also be warm, with around 28C in London and 25C in the West Midlands.
Met Office Warns of Hot Conditions Later in July
These rising temperatures could be a precursor for even hotter weather later in July, according to the Met Office. Forecasters have warned that "hot conditions" above the expected average could hit in the second half of the month. This follows a week in which June temperature records were smashed on three consecutive days.
The Met Office long-range forecast for July 12-26 states: "High pressure is looking slightly more likely than low pressure during the early part of this period, meaning a greater chance of settled and drier than average conditions. Outbreaks of rain and stronger winds are possible at times, these more likely further north. As normal for the time of year, there is still a chance of some heavy and thundery showers which may interrupt any warm and settled weather."
No Reliable Signal for End of July
Towards the end of July, the Met Office notes that there is no reliable signal for preferring any one weather pattern over another. However, it adds: "Temperatures are likely to be above normal on the whole, with a greater than normal chance of hot conditions developing at times."
