Rain fell across the Midlands overnight, providing temporary relief from the exceptionally dry spell that left the region in drought. The Met Office has warned more showers are on the way, along with 'fresher' and 'less humid' conditions.
Drought and Rainfall
Birmingham and the wider West Midlands officially entered a drought on July 29, 2026. Almost three-quarters of England - 71.3 per cent - was experiencing a flash drought following the nation's driest six-month period since 1976.
Despite the wet weather on the way, Tony Grayling, strategic drought lead at the Environment Agency and chair of the National Drought Group, said only 'significant and sustained rainfall' would make a difference.
Forecast Details
According to the Met Office, the West Midlands would experience a 'rather cloudy' Tuesday, with 'the chance of the odd shower' and highs of 23C. The forecast stated: "Most places staying dry with periods of hazy sunshine. Breezier and somewhat fresher, but still feeling rather warm, with temperatures around average."
Overnight, rain moves into the west. Mostly light but turning showery into the early hours. Showers ease by dawn with some clear spells developing. Feeling fresher and less humid.
Upcoming Days
The forecast for tomorrow (Wednesday, August 19) read: "A mostly dry start with the odd shower developing around midday. These move off quickly to the east, leaving sunny spells for most. Temperatures around or just below average."
Meanwhile, the outlook for Thursday, August 20 to Saturday, August 22, stated: "A northerly wind develops for the next few days, allowing temperatures to drop below average. Thunder showers for Thursday and Friday, but brighter and drier for Saturday."
