Reform Pledges Review of Birmingham Clean Air Zone, Calls It 'Net Zero Nonsense'
Reform Pledges Review of Birmingham Clean Air Zone

Reform UK has announced plans to review Birmingham's Clean Air Zone (CAZ), with party leader Jex Parkin describing the scheme as 'net zero nonsense'. In an interview with ITV Central, Parkin, who is tipped to lead the party in Birmingham, stated that the party would take 'action' against the zone.

Background on the Clean Air Zone

The Clean Air Zone was introduced by the Labour council in June 2012 to reduce air pollution. It covers all roads within the A4540 Middleway Ring Road. Non-compliant vehicles are charged £8 per day to enter the zone, with a Fixed Penalty Notice of £120, reduced to £60 if paid within 14 days.

Since its inception, the CAZ has generated over £82.5 million in net surplus revenue. This money has been reinvested in local transport projects and air quality initiatives across Birmingham.

Parkin's Comments

When asked if the environment, particularly the CAZ, remained a priority for Reform, Councillor Parkin (Kingstanding) said: 'Let's review it, but the number one thing is that we need cars to commute and get to work. We don't subscribe to the net zero nonsense that has been pushed upon us for too long.'

He added: 'We would very likely review the measures and take some action.'

Pressed on whether the party believes climate change is real or man-made, Parkin responded: 'It's not about that. It's about what is best for Birmingham. Our message and policy will always revolve around delivering the right thing for the people of the city.'

Reform's Priorities

Parkin emphasised that Reform's priorities remain clear: solving the bin dispute, fixing potholes, and delivering cleaner and safer streets. 'The priority for Reform UK on Birmingham City Council is making sure the bins get collected, cleaning up the streets, and ensuring safe streets for the people of Birmingham,' he said.

Councillor Parkin won the Kingstanding ward alongside John Lambert and is considered one of the leading figures to head Reform in the city.
