The United Kingdom could be in for a prolonged heatwave lasting up to 14 days, with forecasters predicting no rain for some parts of the country. According to the BBC Weather team, there is no sign of precipitation for certain areas over the next two weeks.
Temperatures to Rise from Thursday
Temperatures are expected to climb into the mid- to high-twenties starting from Thursday, May 21. The possible two-week heatwave includes dates from May 22 through June 2. Meteorologists indicate that temperatures could reach 30 degrees Celsius at times over the late May Bank Holiday weekend, with the best weather likely in southern England, including London.
Met Office Outlook for June
The Met Office has issued its initial verdict for June, stating: "High pressure is likely to bring fair weather for most at first. Rain and showers are still possible at times, mainly across Northern Ireland and Scotland. As we head towards mid-June, more mixed conditions are likely with spells of rain and showers. Drier weather is expected between any bouts of wetter weather. These drier interludes will tend to last longer across the south and east of England. Temperatures are most likely to be near or slightly above average overall, with some warm or very warm weather possible."
Bank Holiday Weekend Forecast
Ahead of the Bank Holiday, forecasters predict drier conditions and rising temperatures across the UK as high pressure builds from the north and a plume of warm air spreads up from Spain. By Friday, temperatures could reach 28°C in eastern England, with widespread low to mid-20s elsewhere. Potential highs of 28°C or more are possible over the Bank Holiday weekend.
According to Netweather TV's Nick Finnis, this would meet heatwave criteria in some counties. Jo Farrow added: "For England and Wales, there could be glorious sunshine and it will feel very warm. Temperatures will range from the high teens and the 20s Celsius, potentially up to 28°C. This heat will last into the evening with a more humid feel to the air. And that clammy warmth should be a signal that there is a threat of thunderstorms. There will be the heat, humidity in the air and instability so later in the day or overnight, there is the risk of heavy rain and thunderstorms with the threat lasting into Saturday. There is plenty of uncertainty around quite where and when but the risk is there."
