Two beloved Midlands landscapes have been officially ranked among the very best in England for their stunning scenery, rich wildlife, and peaceful atmosphere.
Survey Highlights Natural Beauty on Birmingham's Doorstep
According to a recent poll of members by the consumer champion Which?, both the Shropshire Hills and the Malvern Hills scored exceptionally highly, placing them in the elite tier of England's National Landscapes, formerly known as Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The findings, published in December 2025, highlight that some of the country's most celebrated scenery is remarkably accessible, lying just over an hour's drive from Birmingham.
The Unspoilt Charm of the Shropshire Hills
The Shropshire Hills achieved an impressive score of 93 out of 100 in the survey. Respondents praised the area's unspoilt character and dramatic topography, defined by rolling ridges, deep valleys, and quiet country lanes. On clear days, the long-distance views stretch far across the West Midlands.
Iconic landmarks like the Long Mynd and the ancient, rocky Stiperstones are major draws for walkers. Despite their popularity, the hills retain a sense of tranquillity, especially during the week or away from the busiest paths. Which? members particularly valued the sense of space and opportunities for wildlife spotting, from red kites soaring overhead to deer moving through woodland at dawn.
The High-Scoring Malvern Hills Ridge
Just a short drive to the east, the Malvern Hills scored even higher, with a near-perfect mark of 97 out of 100. Straddling the border of Herefordshire and Worcestershire, its distinctive ridge is instantly recognisable and offers some of central England's finest viewpoints.
From the open hilltops, visitors can gaze across the Severn Valley and, on a good day, see as far as the Black Mountains and the Cotswolds. The area is exceptionally popular for short walks and picnics, featuring grassy slopes, wooded paths, and small streams. Its well-maintained trails make it accessible for families, while those who climb higher are rewarded with sweeping, panoramic views.
Quality Landscapes Close to Home
While Northumberland topped the overall England rankings for its coastline and dark skies, the strong performance of the two Midlands landscapes underscores the exceptional quality of scenery available much closer to home for West Midlands residents.
For people in Birmingham and the surrounding conurbation, the survey is a timely reminder that a profound escape into nature is within easy reach. Whether seeking a long hike, a quiet picnic spot, or simply a hilltop moment to gain fresh perspective, both the Shropshire and Malvern Hills provide an effortless route to peace and natural beauty without the need for lengthy travel.
