Major UK energy suppliers are facing calls to provide urgent clarity on how they will implement a promised £150 cut to household bills, after several leading firms stepped forward with clear plans.
Leading Suppliers Set the Standard
Octopus Energy, British Gas, and E.ON Next have now publicly confirmed that their customers on fixed tariffs will automatically receive the £150 saving announced by Chancellor Rachel Reeves. The discount is set to be applied from April 2025, stemming from the scrapping of the previous government's energy company obligation scheme.
This move is designed to offer direct relief to families who continue to grapple with high living costs. Richard Neudegg, director of regulation at Uswitch.com, praised these suppliers for "removing all confusion" and allowing households to confidently switch to a cheaper fixed deal now.
Confusion Risks Winter Savings
According to MoneySavingExpert.com, other firms including EDF, Co-op Energy, and Ecotricity are planning to follow suit, but have not yet provided the same public assurances. Uswitch has issued a stark warning that this lack of clarity could deter consumers from switching suppliers during the peak winter period, precisely when they could secure the greatest savings.
"Households can absolutely beat the price cap and save with a fixed deal," stated Neudegg. "It’s really important they don’t feel confused just at the time of year when they’re using the most energy."
Act Now to Beat the Price Cap
Experts are urging consumers not to wait until April to reduce their energy costs. Fixed deals are currently available that are up to £233 below the January price cap, offering immediate savings during the coldest months.
"If you’re on a standard tariff, don’t wait for April to save on your energy bills," Neudegg advised. "You can secure cheaper rates now during winter, and you’ll see your prices drop even further in April without having to take any further action."
The clear message from consumer champions is for all remaining energy suppliers to publicly confirm their plans promptly, enabling more households to lock in the cheapest possible energy this winter with confidence.
