Consumer champion Martin Lewis has directly addressed the widespread scepticism surrounding smart meters, urging households to reconsider their "poor reputation".
Listener's Refusal Sparks Expert Defence
The intervention came during a recent episode of the Martin Lewis Podcast on BBC Sounds. A listener contacted the show to state they "do not under any circumstances want a smart meter fitted", citing the devices' negative public image.
In response, the founder of MoneySavingExpert.com outlined a robust defence of the technology, stating: "I am generally relatively pro smart meters." He proceeded to detail several key advantages for consumers.
The Core Benefits of Smart Meter Technology
Lewis first highlighted the practical convenience, noting that with a smart meter, you no longer need to submit manual meter readings. Your energy usage data is transmitted automatically to your supplier.
He emphasised a more significant financial upside: access to specialised tariffs. "It means a whole range of special tariffs are available to you," Lewis explained, pointing to the growing market for time-of-use tariffs.
These innovative plans offer much cheaper rates for using energy during off-peak hours, such as overnight. This can lead to substantial savings for those who can shift their usage, for example by charging an electric vehicle or running storage heaters at night.
Empowering Consumers to Manage Usage
Another major benefit, according to Lewis, is the in-home display that typically accompanies a smart meter installation. This device shows real-time energy consumption in pounds and pence.
While he joked that watching it "can be depressing", he stressed its value as a powerful management tool. "It's a great way to manage your energy usage," he said.
Lewis shared anecdotal evidence from users who have become adept at linking their display readings to specific appliances. "Lots of people tell me, I looked at the meter, I saw it was running at 19p, I know that must mean I left the lights on upstairs," he recounted. This immediate feedback helps households identify and eliminate wasteful energy use, ultimately reducing bills.
The financial expert concluded that smart meters are a foundational technology for future savings, especially as the energy grid evolves to rely more on flexible, time-based pricing.
