Octopus Energy has confirmed a £860 annual boost for energy customers who have their own driveways. The energy supplier has partnered with Auto Trader to conduct a survey that reveals a significant gap between the perceptions of fuel drivers and the reality of electric vehicle ownership.
Survey Highlights EV Satisfaction
The survey shows that 85 per cent of EV drivers are satisfied with their vehicles, praising convenience, low running costs, and rapid charging. In contrast, fuel drivers hold several misconceptions: they are nearly nine times more likely to think EVs cost more to maintain, and eight times more likely to assume day-to-day running costs are higher.
Charging Infrastructure Progress
The UK has surpassed its charger target, with 111,000 chargers installed nationwide. Octopus states that EV owners who charge at home on a specialist tariff save an average of £860 per year, which is enough to cover the cost of a few weekends away instead of spending on petrol.
EV owners are almost twice as likely to describe their car as more reliable than a petrol equivalent. Charging at home, which more than half of fuel drivers expect to be a headache, is actually one of the most appreciated features: 9 out of 10 EV owners who can charge at home find it easy and convenient.
Expert Comments
Matt Davies, Founder and Director of Octopus Electroverse, said: "The biggest barrier to EV adoption today isn't infrastructure or performance, it's a lack of information. Many petrol and diesel drivers think EVs are complicated and expensive, but in reality thousands of EV owners say they're reliable, cheaper to run, and a joy to drive. The driver conversations and data show that it's getting behind the wheel that really counts: anyone who's curious should jump in and experience the benefits firsthand!"
Erin Baker, Editorial Director at Auto Trader, added: "Electric vehicles are a once-in-a-generation technology shift which is exciting and intimidating all at once. We know EV drivers love their cars and the driving and ownership experiences they bring, but many who haven't made the switch yet still have concerns. This new data shows a big perception versus reality problem and so we're delighted to join Octopus Electroverse to shout about the EV glow and empower more drivers to electrify their driving."
