In a landmark move for UK households, Octopus Energy has dramatically expanded its pioneering Zero Bills scheme, now offering homes in 11 areas across the country the chance to live with no energy costs for up to ten years. The energy giant's latest announcement marks a significant milestone with the launch of Scotland's first eligible site in Dundee.
Scotland's First Zero Bills Development Goes Live
On Wednesday, 14 January 2026, Octopus Energy confirmed that 57 homes delivered in partnership with Discovery Homes in Dundee are now part of the scheme. This development represents Scotland's inaugural Zero Bills site, allowing residents to move into properties equipped with advanced green technology without facing a single home energy bill for a guaranteed period.
The company stated that these Dundee householders are now "guaranteed no home energy bills for 10 years thanks to Octopus’ world-first tariff." The Zero Bills initiative, first launched in 2022, integrates cutting-edge technology including heat pumps, solar panels, and batteries into new homes from the outset.

Beyond Bill Savings: A Vision for the Future Grid
Octopus Energy emphasises that the benefits of the Zero Bills homes extend far beyond mere financial relief for residents. A spokesperson for the firm explained: "Of course, not paying an energy bill for your home is a game-changer. But these homes do much more than save money. They also help to balance the grid, reduce carbon emissions, and show what is possible when clean tech is built into homes from day one."
The company, which rivals other major suppliers like EDF Energy, British Gas, Scottish Power, EON Next, and Ovo, is taking its model global. It has already launched similar sites in Germany and New Zealand and is actively working with UK social housing providers and local authorities to improve affordability and access.
This expansion signals a transformative shift in how energy provision and housing development can intersect, offering a tangible solution to high living costs while actively contributing to environmental targets and grid stability.
