In a groundbreaking move for British households, Octopus Energy has announced a major expansion of its revolutionary 'Zero Bills' initiative, now guaranteeing customers no energy bills for a minimum of five years.
Retrofitting Homes for a Bill-Free Future
The UK's largest energy supplier is taking its world-first scheme to the next level by trialing retrofit installations for existing homes. This strategic expansion means thousands more households across Britain could soon eliminate their energy costs entirely.
Octopus Energy aims to deliver 100,000 'Zero Bills' homes by 2030, having already successfully rolled out the initiative in Germany and New Zealand alongside its UK operations.
How the Zero Bills Transformation Works
The energy company's upgrade trials will comprehensively transform existing properties through installation of cutting-edge green technology. Each home receives a complete package including a heat pump, battery storage system and solar panels.
This brings properties up to Octopus's exclusive 'Zero Bills' standard, where residents benefit from no energy bills and no standing charges for at least five years, guaranteed.
Nigel Banks, Zero Bills Director at Octopus Energy, commented: "Upgrading existing homes is the next step in making energy-bill-free living accessible to more people."
Local Authority Partnership Driving Change
The initiative has gained significant momentum through collaboration with Suffolk County Council, marking the first local authority partnership for the Zero Bills scheme.
Councillor Philip Faircloth-Mutton, Suffolk County Council's Cabinet Member for Environment, Communities and Equality, stated: "Suffolk County Council prides itself in bringing pioneering net zero projects to our residents, and we're excited to be the first local authority working with Octopus Energy on 'Zero Bills'.
"We appreciate the role we have as local authority to be able to lead, influence and support local residents in as many ways possible to help reduce both their energy bills and their impact on the environment."
Banks added: "Thanks to the innovative approach from Suffolk County Council, local authorities can now play a vital role in bringing sustainable, cost-free energy to householders."
Octopus has already accredited well over 1,200 'Zero Bills' homes through contracts with prominent developers, spanning affordable and private rent arrangements alongside private and shared ownership models.
The company emphasises that by working collaboratively with communities and local authorities, they can help residents eliminate bills permanently while simultaneously reducing carbon emissions and creating a replicable model for greener living across the UK.
