Octopus Energy: Three Simple Habits Can Slash £240 Off Your Energy Bill
Three Habits to Save £240 on Energy Bills

Energy supplier Octopus Energy has unveiled a trio of straightforward behavioural changes that could collectively put £240 back into the pockets of UK households this winter. The advice comes as the company celebrates a significant milestone in its drive towards a more efficient energy grid.

Three Key Changes for Substantial Savings

The company's winter savings tips focus on practical, immediate actions that require minimal investment but yield significant financial returns. According to Octopus, the first step is to tackle draughts around the home. Draught proofing windows and doors can prevent warm air from escaping, potentially saving customers around £85 annually.

The second recommendation involves gaining better control over heating systems. By being more mindful of thermostat settings and avoiding overheating empty rooms, households could save an estimated £90 per year. The third tip targets those with combi boilers, suggesting that setting the boiler's flow temperature to 55°C can improve efficiency and cut a further £65 from yearly bills.

A Million Smart Meters and a Manchester Celebration

This advice follows a landmark achievement for the energy firm. In December 2025, Octopus Energy installed its one-millionth smart meter of the year, a first for the company and a key step in modernising the UK's energy infrastructure.

The milestone installation took place at the home of Martin Browne, 50, from Manchester. To mark the occasion, Octopus staged a memorable celebration complete with a unicorn, a brass band, balloons, and confetti cannons. The event was given a local flavour with a surprise appearance by comedian and Manchester legend Jason Manford.

Smart Meters: The Key to Cheaper, Cleaner Energy

Rebecca Dibb-Simkin, Chief Product Officer at Octopus Energy, emphasised the importance of this technology. "Smart meters aren’t just little boxes on the wall – they’re the key to cheaper bills, cleaner energy and a grid that works for everyone," she stated.

"Hitting a million installs this year shows just how much customers want to take control of their energy, and we’re over the moon to help them do it," Dibb-Simkin added, noting the unique Manchester celebration.

Octopus, which operates alongside rivals like British Gas and EDF, also highlighted its broader commitment to green energy. The company manages a £7 billion renewables portfolio and has expanding businesses in electric vehicle leasing, heat pump installation, and solar power.

The firm urges customers not to dismiss small, everyday energy-saving actions. "It's easy to tune them out, thinking they won't make much difference. But small actions really do add up, and combined together you can stand to really save!" an Octopus spokesperson concluded.
