UK households can 'halve' washing machine bills with one simple setting change
Washing machine setting can 'halve' your energy bill

Households across the UK could significantly cut their energy costs by making a simple adjustment to their washing machine routine, according to new consumer advice.

The power of a cooler wash

Consumer champion Which? has issued guidance stating that one of the most effective ways to reduce energy bills is to wash laundry at a lower temperature. Their research found substantial savings are possible by turning down the dial.

Switching from a 40°C wash to 30°C can save 38% of the energy used. An even more dramatic reduction is achieved at 20°C, which saves up to 62% of energy – effectively halving the energy consumption compared to a 40°C cycle.

What the savings mean for your wallet

Based on the October 2025 price cap, Which? calculates that the average washing machine costs around £65 per year to run, assuming four washes per week. By consistently washing at 30°C, households could shave approximately £25 off their annual energy bill.

Choosing a 20°C cycle for suitable loads increases the annual saving to around £40. The consumer group notes that for most everyday stains, this lower temperature should not compromise cleaning performance, making it a practical way to cut costs.

When is a cooler wash suitable?

Washing at 30°C is highlighted as an environmentally friendly choice that is also gentler on delicate and brightly coloured fabrics, helping them last longer. BBC Morning Live's Dr Xand van Tulleken echoed this advice earlier in 2025, stating that 30°C "gets the job done" for everyday items and is much cheaper and quicker.

Dr van Tulleken added, "I'm a 20 degrees guy for everything except my workout clothes, which go in hotter." He also recommended using a detergent designed for lower temperatures for optimal results.

Important exceptions and hygiene advice

Which? does caution that there are times when cooler washes are not appropriate. For tougher stains, a 40°C wash remains more effective. Crucially, for hygiene-critical items, a higher temperature is essential.

The watchdog advises, "To ensure you banish bacteria from your items, you need to be washing at 60°C or higher with a good detergent." This is particularly important for items like towels, bedding, and clothes worn during illness.

By understanding these simple guidelines, UK consumers can make informed choices that protect their clothes, their hygiene, and their household budgets.
