Greggs Discontinues Popular Vegan Breakfast Item
High street bakery chain Greggs has removed its Vegan Breakfast Roll from menus, describing the move as giving the product a 'well-deserved rest'. The company expressed sadness over the decision while hinting it 'may not be a permanent change'.
Customer Backlash Over Menu Removal
Vegan customers have reacted with strong disappointment to the discontinuation of the breakfast roll, which featured vegan Quorn mycoprotein sausages. Many have taken to social media to voice their frustrations, with some declaring they now see 'zero point' in visiting Greggs stores.
One customer stated: 'This was my go-to breakfast!!! I used to go after my swim and would often get the vegan breakfast roll. No point in going now.'
Another commented: 'Even when I went to Greggs semi-regularly in the mornings, it was extremely hit and miss whether they had them. It's the age-old story of announcing a vegan product, not actually having it in stock anywhere, and then discontinuing it when nobody buys it.'
Greggs' Official Response
In a statement to customers, Greggs explained: 'On completing our last review, we've made the decision to give these a well-deserved rest. Just to let you know, this may not be a permanent change. We're sad to see them go too, but we're pleased to have added new lines, which we hope that you'll try in the future.'
The company emphasized they regularly review their product range to stay current with customer preferences and have passed feedback about the Vegan Breakfast Roll to their retail team for consideration in future reviews.
Impact on Vegan Community
Vegan Food UK highlighted on Instagram that the removal represents a loss of budget-friendly plant-based breakfast options on the high street. The Vegan Breakfast Roll had become a staple for many vegan customers who appreciated having an affordable, convenient breakfast choice.
One disappointed customer noted: 'This was my favourite vegan product @greggs_official. I used to get loads of donuts etc for my kids too whilst there. Stuff them, not anymore. Like you say, zero point stepping foot in their stores now as a vegan.'
While Greggs has introduced new menu items, the removal of this particular vegan option has left a noticeable gap for plant-based customers who relied on it as a regular breakfast choice.
