Binman Reveals One Recycling Habit Is Wasted Effort, But Stresses Key Rule
Binman: Recycling Habit Wasted, But Key Rule Must Be Followed

Binman's TikTok Advice: Stop Wasting Time on Labels, Focus on Cleanliness

A refuse worker has sparked debate by claiming that one common recycling practice is largely a waste of time, but he warns households must adhere to another crucial rule to ensure their bins are collected. In a viral video on his TikTok account @Theno1.binman, the binman addressed whether labels need to be removed from tins and jars before recycling.

He stated clearly: "No, you don't need to. There's a certain number of items you are allowed to leave labels on. We don't expect you to scrape off the paper or whatever it is." This challenges the habit many people have of soaking jars and tins in hot water to loosen glue and peel off labels, believing it aids recycling.

Cleanliness Is Non-Negotiable for Bin Collection

However, the binman emphasized that while label removal is often unnecessary, cleaning containers is essential. "That doesn't mean you shouldn't clean them still," he added. "If there is food inside that needs to come out, we don't want it. It can spread across other things and can become a contaminated bin and nobody wants that." Contamination can lead to entire loads being rejected, risking non-collection.

Official sources support this advice. The Recycle Now website confirms labels 'can be left on' food and drink tins, but items must be emptied and rinsed. Similarly, Zero Waste Scotland and Wales Recycles advise that labels can typically remain unless local councils specify otherwise.

Local Variations in Recycling Rules

Recycling regulations can differ significantly by area, with councils setting their own restrictions. For instance, some London boroughs do not accept shredded paper, while others require it to be bagged to prevent machinery issues. General best practices include:

  • Empty and rinse glass bottles and jars to avoid contamination.
  • Replace lids and caps so they can be captured during sorting.

The TikTok binman, who has over 155,000 followers, previously warned that attempting to 'sneak' prohibited items like polystyrene into bins could result in rubbish being left uncollected. While polystyrene is technically recyclable, it is rarely accepted due to processing challenges and cost.

Residents are urged to check their local council's website for accurate, up-to-date recycling guidelines to avoid penalties and support effective waste management.
