Birmingham's Festive Tip Hours Extended Until End of January
Birmingham Council Tips Extend Festive Opening Hours

Residents across Birmingham will find it easier to dispose of their festive waste this year, as the city council announces a significant extension to tip opening hours.

Extended Opening Hours for Festive Period

All five of Birmingham's household waste and recycling centres will operate on a special schedule from Sunday, 21 December until Friday, 31 January. This move is designed to accommodate the increased volume of waste and recycling generated over the Christmas and New Year period.

From Monday to Friday, the tips will be open from 7am until 9pm. Weekend hours will run from 8am to 6pm on both Saturdays and Sundays.

Christmas and New Year Exceptions

There will be some adjustments to the normal festive schedule. On Christmas Eve, the centres will open at 7am but will close earlier, at 6pm.

The facilities will be completely closed on both Christmas Day and Boxing Day. For New Year's Eve, a shorter day will operate, with opening from 7am to 6pm.

The council is advising visitors that pre-booking is required for all centres except the Castle Bromwich site. This system helps to manage queues and ensure a smoother experience for residents.

Making Recycling More Accessible

Councillor Majid Mahmood commented on the changes, stating: "These extended hours are about making recycling easier, more accessible and more convenient during one of the busiest times of the year." The initiative aims to reduce fly-tipping and encourage responsible waste disposal when household collections may be disrupted.

The five affected recycling centres are located across the city, including the site in Perry Barr.

Meanwhile, an unrelated industrial dispute between Birmingham City Council and Unite the union is set to continue into 2026. A third major demonstration, dubbed a "megapicket," is being organised by Strike Map.

Protesters aim to mobilise people from across the country to join action starting at 6am on 30 January. This "Megapicket 3-D" will attempt to shut down all five depot sites in Birmingham and Coventry, following similar successful actions in May and July of this year.
