Walsall's European-Scale Super Tip Prepares for Grand Opening
Walsall's European-Scale Super Tip Opening Soon

Walsall is preparing to unveil what is being described as the largest household waste recycling centre in Europe, with the new £32 million super tip in Aldridge set to open its gates to the public next week. The state-of-the-art facility represents a significant investment in modern waste management infrastructure for the borough.

A Modern Solution for Waste Management

The Household Waste Recycling Centre and Waste Transfer Station on Middlemore Lane will officially begin operations on Monday, February 2, following the completion of construction that began in August 2024. The council had been awaiting final approval from the Environment Agency before announcing the opening date to residents.

Councillor Suky Samra, portfolio holder for clean and green at Walsall Council, emphasised the facility's importance for the borough's environmental goals. "This facility represents a major step forward in modernising waste services across the borough, making recycling easier, more efficient and more sustainable for our residents," she stated.

Addressing Community Concerns

While excitement builds around the new facility, local leaders have acknowledged concerns raised by residents regarding potential traffic impacts on surrounding roads. Councillor Mike Bird, leader of Walsall Council, expressed confidence that the facility's substantial size would help mitigate these issues.

"Waste touches everyone's life, once a week when it's collected, and in some parts of the country that doesn't happen," Councillor Bird remarked. "Our relationship with our bin crews and our residents is testament to the success of what we're seeing today."

Environmental Benefits and Features

The new super tip, located at the former McKennie Brass site, has been designed with both residents and environmental sustainability in mind. Key features include:

  • Holding capacity for more than 140 vehicles simultaneously
  • Advanced waste separation and processing capabilities
  • A dedicated reuse shop for upcycling and repairing items
  • Significant landfill diversion potential

Councillor Samra highlighted the environmental benefits, noting that the facility "will help reduce landfill, encourage reuse and support Walsall's wider sustainability and carbon reduction goals." She described the site as "a real example of practical action for a greener and cleaner Walsall."

Operational Details and Requirements

The facility will operate seven days a week with varying opening hours:

  1. Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday: 9am – 5pm
  2. Tuesday: 10am – 6pm
  3. Thursday: 9am – 4pm

Residents wishing to use the site will need to provide proof of residence through one of the following documents:

  • Driving licence
  • Recent council tax letter
  • Utility bill

Transition from Existing Facilities

With the new super tip coming into operation, the existing tip on Merchants Way, located approximately half a mile from Middlemore Lane, will cease operations from Sunday, February 1. Meanwhile, the Fryers Road tip in Bloxwich will remain open to residents ahead of planned redevelopment, though specific details about these plans have yet to be announced.

Kathryn Moreton, director of environment at Walsall Council, praised the collaborative effort behind the project. "I'm incredibly proud of the team," she said. "It's years of hard work that has come together with some great partners to create a really exciting facility for Walsall."

The new facility represents a significant step forward in waste management for the region, combining substantial capacity with environmental consciousness and community-focused design.
