Walsall's New 'Super-Tip' Opens: Europe's Largest Waste Facility Welcomes Residents
Walsall's New 'Super-Tip' Opens: Europe's Largest Facility

Residents in Walsall are set to benefit from a state-of-the-art waste disposal facility as a new 'super-tip', hailed as the largest of its kind in Europe, prepares to open its doors next week. The site, located in Aldridge, marks a significant upgrade in local waste services after years of planning and construction.

A Modern Waste Solution Years in the Making

Construction on the Aldridge site began in 2024 and was completed last year, but the facility awaited crucial Environment Agency certification before becoming operational. This certification ensures the tip meets all environmental and safety standards, allowing it to serve the community effectively from its opening on Monday.

Key Features of the New Super-Tip

The facility boasts several innovative features designed to enhance recycling and sustainability:

  • Dedicated Reuse Shop: A standout element is the on-site reuse shop, which aims to give a second life to items that might otherwise be discarded. Staff will upcycle and repair furniture and household goods, preparing them for safe, low-cost sale to residents.
  • Expanded Capacity: Situated at the former McKennie Brass site, the tip has a holding capacity for more than 140 vehicles, streamlining the waste disposal process and reducing wait times.
  • Extended Opening Hours: The super-tip will operate seven days a week, with varied hours to accommodate different schedules: 9am–5pm on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday; 10am–6pm on Tuesday; and 9am–4pm on Thursday.

Transition from Old to New Facilities

With the new facility's launch, the existing tip on Merchants Way, approximately half a mile from Middlemore Lane, will cease operations from Sunday, February 1. Meanwhile, the Fryers Road tip in Bloxwich will remain open to residents ahead of planned redevelopment, though specific details on this project are yet to be announced.

Access Requirements for Residents

To use the super-tip, Walsall residents must provide proof of residence, such as a driving licence, a recent council tax letter, or a utility bill. This measure helps ensure the facility serves the local community efficiently and prevents misuse.

Community and Leadership Reactions

Local leaders have expressed enthusiasm for the project, highlighting its potential to transform waste management in the borough. Councillor Samra remarked, "This facility represents a major step forward in modernising waste services across the borough, making recycling easier, more efficient and more sustainable for our residents."

Councillor Bird added, "Waste touches everyone's life, once a week when it's collected, and in some parts of the country that doesn't happen. Our relationship with our bins crews and our residents is testament to the success of what we're seeing today."

Kathryn Moreton, director of environment, shared her pride in the team's efforts: "I'm incredibly proud of the team. It's years of hard work that has come together with some great partners to create a really exciting facility for Walsall."

The opening of this super-tip is seen as a practical step towards a cleaner, more sustainable Walsall, with the reuse shop particularly praised for diverting items from landfill and promoting a circular economy. As residents gear up to use the new facility, it promises to set a benchmark for waste management across the region.
