Bradford's E-Bike Scheme Launches in March, Funded by Clean Air Zone Fines
Bradford E-Bike Hire Scheme to Launch in March

A major new electric bike hire scheme for Bradford will finally launch in March 2026, with its funding directly linked to penalties collected from the city's Clean Air Zone (CAZ).

From CAZ Charges to Clean Transport

Bradford Council has confirmed the long-awaited initiative is "on track" for a March start, following its initial approval back in September 2024. The project represents a tangible recycling of environmental penalties, as it will be financed using £800,000 of revenue generated from the Clean Air Zone charges.

The council's Executive Member for Healthy People and Places, Sarah Ferriby, stated the scheme will offer residents and visitors "a convenient and easy option for journeys around the city." The operational contract has been awarded to Beryl, the company already running a successful e-bike hire service in Leeds.

Network Coverage and Key Features

The initial phase of the e-bike network will connect major hubs across the district. Key locations confirmed include:

  • Bradford Interchange and Forster Square Station
  • Bradford University
  • The city's main hospitals and colleges
  • Existing cycle superhighways

The scheme's reach will extend north to Saltaire and Shipley. Council funding is expected to provide up to 200 e-bikes and at least 41 docking station hubs. A mix of docking stations, painted bays, and geofenced areas will be used, with designs considering accessibility for visually impaired users.

Future Expansion and Associated Plans

Usage data will guide ongoing improvements and potential expansion. The council has pledged to offer incentives and discounts to ensure affordability and encourage widespread participation.

Andrew Whittles, Director for Sustainability, explained the reason for the delay: "We had a supplier ready, but under Council standing orders we need to see the goods before we pay for them. But the bikes have now been delivered."

In a related development, the Council has applied to the Department for Transport to run a concurrent e-scooter pilot scheme, where the supplier would provide 50 e-scooters. The Mayor of West Yorkshire, Tracy Brabin, has also requested the scheme adopt the regional 'Weaver' branding.
