The Met Office has issued a stark warning for Britons to prepare for a significant arctic blast set to grip the nation next week. Following the disruption caused by Storm Claudia, this new weather system threatens to bring temperatures as low as -7 degrees Celsius and widespread snow.
From Floods to Frost: A Dramatic Weather Shift
The UK is facing a dramatic change in conditions. The aftermath of Storm Claudia, which caused extensive flooding and major travel disruption, is set to be replaced by a piercing cold front. Deputy Chief Meteorologist Dan Holley explained the cause: "As Storm Claudia retreats to the south, high pressure to the north west will drive a cold northerly flow from the Arctic across the UK."
This shift will mark a sharp end to the recent spell of mild weather, introducing conditions far colder than the UK has experienced lately.
Widespread Hazards and Bitter Temperatures
The incoming cold snap will bring more than just a chill. The Met Office highlights a genuine risk of wintry hazards, including snow and ice. The forecaster anticipates widespread frosts across the UK, with overnight temperatures diving to a bitter -7°C in some areas.
Daytime temperatures are not expected to offer much relief, likely remaining in single figures nationwide. Mr. Holley added a further caution: "Couple this with a brisk northerly wind, and there will be a marked wind chill. This will be a notable change in our weather after a prolonged spell of above-average temperatures."
Snow Forecast to Reach the South Coast
The snowfall is predicted to be extensive, reaching as far south as Devon and Cornwall. Forecasts suggest parts of the country could see snowfall rates of 1mm per hour. Counties in the South East, including East and West Sussex, are also expected to see accumulations of around 0.5mm.
The Met Office has provided a full list of 22 counties under a snow forecast:
