Geese Stolen from Newport Park Feared Taken for Christmas Dinner
Geese stolen from park ahead of Christmas

Authorities in a Welsh city have raised the alarm after several geese were stolen from a popular park, with fears they are being taken to be served as Christmas dinner.

Birds Vanish from Black Ash Park

The incident is centred on Black Ash Park in Newport, Wales, a well-loved spot known for its population of geese and ducks which visitors enjoy feeding. The birds are privately owned by a local resident, but at least five geese have gone missing in the space of a single week.

Councillors have expressed serious concern that the timing of the disappearances is directly linked to the upcoming festive period. Lliswerry Councillor Allan Morris confirmed he had been contacted by the worried owner.

‘Seriously, It’s Not Funny’ Says Councillor

Speaking to the South West Argus, Councillor Morris stated: “Over the last week I’ve been contacted by the owner, and he’s concerned that five of his geese have gone missing and people are taking them for food.” He emphasised the suspicious timing, adding, “They’ve significantly reduced the numbers and it’s no coincidence that Christmas is coming up.”

In a separate online post, the councillor issued a stern warning to those responsible and a plea to the public. “Seriously it’s not funny,” he wrote. “If you see anyone harassing or trying to capture one of the geese or ducks, please challenge them or ring one of the ward councillors and we will notify the owner.”

Public Urged to Buy Dinner Responsibly

Councillor Morris offered clear advice to anyone seeking a traditional festive bird, stating: “If you want a goose for your Christmas dinner, get one from a supermarket or traditional butchers.”

The thefts have caused significant distress and highlight the vulnerability of animals in public spaces. Officials are relying on community vigilance to prevent further losses from the park's wildlife population.
