Acorns Big Summer Swim: Every Length Counts
Acorns Children's Hospice has launched its Big Summer Swim challenge, calling on swimmers of all abilities to dive in and raise vital funds for children with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions. The initiative aims to turn every length swum into life-changing care for seriously ill children and their families across the Midlands.
The charity, which operates three hospices in the region, including one in Birmingham, provides specialist nursing care and support for children with complex medical needs. The Big Summer Swim invites participants to complete a swimming challenge of their choice—whether it's 100 lengths, a mile, or a sponsored swim—and collect donations to support Acorns' work.
How the Challenge Works
Swimmers can sign up individually or as part of a team, setting their own distance goals from July to September 2025. The challenge is open to all ages and abilities, with participants encouraged to swim at local pools or open water venues. Acorns provides a fundraising pack with tips, a sponsor form, and a certificate for completing the challenge.
According to Acorns, every £20 raised can fund an hour of specialist nursing care for a child. The charity currently supports over 750 children and 1,000 families across the region, relying almost entirely on donations and fundraising events to deliver its services.
Impact on Families
For families like the Thompsons from Solihull, Acorns has been a lifeline. Their daughter, Lily, who has a rare genetic condition, receives regular respite care at the hospice. "Acorns gives us the chance to rest and recharge, knowing Lily is safe and happy," said her mother, Sarah Thompson. "Every swim length makes a real difference to families like ours."
The Big Summer Swim is part of Acorns' broader fundraising calendar, which includes events like the Big Walk and Big Bike Ride. Last year, the charity's swimming challenges raised over £50,000, funding more than 2,500 hours of care.
Get Involved
To participate, individuals can register on the Acorns website and set up a fundraising page. The charity encourages swimmers to share their progress on social media using the hashtag #BigSummerSwim to inspire others. Acorns also offers support for organizing group swims at local leisure centers or lakes.
With the NHS under pressure, charities like Acorns play a crucial role in providing palliative and respite care for children with complex needs. The Big Summer Swim offers a fun, active way for the community to contribute to this vital cause.
