Doctors have told Beverley Callard that she should have begun her radiotherapy treatment earlier. The 69-year-old actress, who revealed her early-stage breast cancer diagnosis earlier this year, has been keeping fans updated on her health journey.
Latest Appointment Update
The Coronation Street legend, known for playing Liz McDonald on and off for 30 years, recently moved to Ireland with her husband Jon McEwan to star in BBC soap Fair City. She took to social media to share how her appointment with her new surgeon went.
In an Instagram video on Tuesday evening, she said: 'Well I went to the hospital today at quarter past three, and they all seemed very nice, obviously they're new to me.'
She added: 'They are a little concerned because they think I should've started the radiotherapy before now but of course because we moved house, it took a while for my medical records to come from England to Ireland et cetera but they've all arrived now.'
Treatment Plan
The former I'm A Celebrity...South Africa star explained she has another appointment later this week and will begin treatment soon. She said: 'I've got to go back on Thursday morning to see some more doctors and medical people and then they will begin it soon so it went okay, it went okay. So I will keep you updated.'
The actress, also known for Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps, captioned the post: 'A trip to the breast clinic today… it went ok, not quite what I wanted to hear but a step forward nonetheless. Hoping to get started as soon as possible!'
Fans' Support
At the end of the Bank Holiday weekend, Beverley thanked fans for their support, saying she felt 'nervous' but ready to begin treatment. She said: 'I go see my new surgeon on Tuesday so she can see what my previous surgeon has done because obviously I've moved to Ireland, and then on Thursday, I've got my first appointment with the oncologist so I'll be starting radiotherapy very soon. I'm all ready for it and I'm full of beans and really going for it.'
She added: 'Obviously, I'm a bit nervous. You've been great, you've sent me zillions of messages. For every single person, it's unique and different so we will just see what happens. Thanks for all your messages - even people telling me what shampoo and conditioner to use, I really appreciate it.'
Diagnosis Reveal
Beverley first shared her diagnosis in February during an appearance on RTE's Late Late Show. She received the news just minutes before she was due on set for her new soap role. She said: 'I've had some tests just before I left the UK, and literally, 15, 20 minutes before I was in my dressing room at Fair City, getting ready to go on, and I was quite nervous and thinking, 'I hope everybody thinks I'm all right', whatever. And my consultant rang me and said, 'you've got to come back to the UK' I said, 'Well, I can't possibly, I've just taken a new job'. I said 'I'm away for a month', and I was diagnosed with breast cancer. But I'm fine, I'm absolutely fine. My head was a bit mashed for the first few days. It's very early stages, and I'm along with thousands of other women as well.'
