King's Lynn Charity Breast of Friends Transforms Hospital Cancer Care
The registered charity Breast of Friends, based in King's Lynn, Norfolk, is operated by a dedicated committee of generous volunteers. Their impactful efforts have significantly enhanced local healthcare services, particularly for cancer patients.
Major Contributions to Hospital Refurbishment and Equipment
Last year, the Cancer Care Unit at the hospital underwent a comprehensive refurbishment to create an uplifting environment, supporting approximately 12,000 patients annually. Breast of Friends played a crucial role in making this transformation possible through their fundraising initiatives, collaborating with other contributors.
Additionally, the charity donated funds to purchase a specialist reclining couch for the Breast Care Unit at the Trust, designed to improve patient comfort during treatments.
Support for Mastectomy Patients
A significant portion of the raised money was allocated to buy 108 specialist post-surgery bras for patients who have undergone mastectomy, or breast removal surgery. These bras are specially designed with discreet pockets to securely hold silicone breast prostheses, providing essential support during recovery.
Personal Insights from the Chair Trustee
Claire Ling, chair trustee of Breast of Friends, shared her emotional connection to the cause. "Raising money is incredibly humbling and emotional for everyone involved with Breast of Friends, and for me personally," she said. "Having received treatment from both the breast and cancer care units at the hospital, I’ve seen first-hand how vital these services are."
She added, "Knowing that the generosity of our supporters is directly helping the same units that supported me makes this achievement even more special. It’s a powerful reminder of what a community can achieve together."
Ling also highlighted the importance of becoming a registered charity, stating it strengthens their ability to secure funding and continue supporting local Breast Care and Cancer Care patients.
Diverse Fundraising Events and Community Impact
The group has organized a dynamic calendar of events to raise funds, including brave sky dives, fun drag brunches, creative craft fairs, and an annual ball held in October. Their first event of 2026, a casino night, successfully raised over £2,000.
Hospital Staff Appreciation
Dawn Collins, interim chief nurse at The QEH, expressed gratitude for the charity's contributions. "Funds such as this are used to go above and beyond the care that the NHS can provide," she said. "Thanks to the Breast of Friends charity, every mastectomy patient receives a specialist bra after their surgery, making a difference at a vulnerable time."
Creation of a Kindness Corner
Breast of Friends has also established a Kindness Corner in the hospital's Cancer Care Unit, offering small thoughtful gifts for patients. Donated items include toiletries, silk pillowcases, handwarmers, anti-sickness bracelets, and puzzles, all selected with cancer patients' needs in mind.
The charity remains committed to its mission, continuing to support the local community through ongoing fundraising and outreach efforts.
