A courageous Essex woman has transformed her personal cancer battle into an extraordinary fundraising achievement, raising more than £10,000 for the hospital team that supported her through treatment by completing a challenging trek to Everest Base Camp.
From Diagnosis to Determination
Natalie Robinson's life changed in May 2023 when the 37-year-old from Wickford discovered a small lump. She visited her GP the very next day and was promptly referred to Basildon Hospital where she received the difficult confirmation: early-stage breast cancer.
The following month brought a mastectomy, followed by an intensive 16-week chemotherapy programme beginning that August. Throughout this challenging period, Natalie found strength in the exceptional care provided by the hospital team, who remained consistently supportive and attentive to her needs.
The Everest Challenge
With treatment completed, Natalie decided to mark her recovery with an ambitious personal milestone while giving back to those who had helped her. In September, she embarked on an 18-day trek to Everest Base Camp in Nepal, accompanied by her husband James.
"It's something I've always dreamed of doing, but this gave it meaning," Natalie explained. "A way to thank the people who helped me through my hardest days, and to do something incredible for myself."
Already maintaining an active lifestyle, Natalie prepared thoroughly for the challenge. Her training regimen included hikes with both her husband and their five-year-old daughter Millie, who even joined them on daily school walks to help build endurance for the epic journey.
Remarkable Fundraising Success
The determined effort yielded incredible results, with £10,195 raised through generous support from friends, family and local fundraising events. The significant sum will directly enhance patient facilities at Basildon Hospital's breast unit.
Vanessa Kendle, Basildon breast unit manager, expressed profound gratitude: "We will be forever grateful for Natalie's hard work in raising such a significant amount of money, which will help improve patient facilities and make it a more welcoming place to receive care."
The funds will enable refurbishment of patient treatment areas and the addition of more comfortable couches in clinical rooms, directly improving the experience for future patients.
Clair Dade from Mid and South Essex Hospitals Charity added: "Our charity and breast unit teams have all been following Natalie's journey on social media and are so proud of what she's achieved. Her fundraising will make a real difference for other patients for years to come."
Reflecting on the ongoing support from her medical team, Natalie shared: "Throughout my treatment the team at Basildon were so supportive. They were always there when I had questions or needed reassurance. I always felt listened to and truly cared for. Even now, I can call them anytime I need support."
