Taskmaster Star Fatiha El-Ghorri Discloses Secret Cancer Battle and Menopause Challenges
Comedian Fatiha El-Ghorri, who appeared on the popular Channel 4 show Taskmaster, has bravely shared her secret battle with cancer, revealing that she underwent surgery last summer after an abnormality was detected during a routine health check. The 44-year-old star detailed her ordeal on social media, emphasizing the importance of seeking medical attention for any unusual symptoms.
From Precautionary Surgery to Cancer Diagnosis
In February of last year, Fatiha underwent a transvaginal scan as part of a health check-up, which showed an abnormality in her womb. Her GP advised urgent further tests, leading to a recommendation for a precautionary hysterectomy. She decided to have her ovaries removed simultaneously to reduce the risk of future complications. Doctors later confirmed that she had stage 1 endometrial cancer, also known as womb cancer, but fortunately, it had not spread beyond her womb, allowing for complete removal without the need for chemotherapy or additional surgery.
The Unexpected Challenge of Medical Menopause
Fatiha explained that the surgery plunged her into "medical menopause" overnight, a condition she described as more challenging than the operation itself. She highlighted that menopause involves far more than just hot flushes and mood swings, listing symptoms such as low mood, vaginal dryness, changes in appetite, dry skin, hair changes, depression, and memory problems. "We have to do more, menopause ain't a joke. It changes your life forever, physically, mentally and hormonally," she wrote, calling for greater awareness and support.
Recovery Struggles and Emotional Impact
Post-surgery, Fatiha faced significant difficulties in her recovery. She had keyhole surgery with five cuts along her abdomen, which left her unable to perform basic tasks. "I couldn't do anything for myself. Basic stuff was impossible like sitting upright, coughing, sneezing, laughing and going to the toilet," she shared. She also couldn't lift objects, pick things up from the floor, or tie her shoelaces, and wasn't able to bend at the waist until Christmas. This helplessness led to feelings of shame, and she initially kept her condition private, only confiding in a close circle of friends and family.
Symptoms of Womb Cancer and Urgent Advice
The NHS outlines key symptoms of womb cancer that individuals should watch for:
- Bleeding or spotting from the vagina after menopause
- Heavy periods that are unusual for you
- Vaginal bleeding between periods
- A change in vaginal discharge
Other potential symptoms include:
- A lump or swelling in the tummy or pelvis
- Pain in the lower back or pelvis
- Pain during sex
- Changes in urination or bowel habits
While these symptoms can be caused by various conditions, the NHS urges people not to wait and to contact a GP promptly, as early detection can make cancer easier to treat. Fatiha echoed this advice, encouraging her followers to seek help if they notice any changes in their health.
Fatiha expressed gratitude for the support from her loved ones during this challenging time and hopes her story will inspire others to prioritize their health and well-being.
