John Robertson, a 35-year-old father of three from Ayr, Scotland, has shared his devastating diagnosis of stage four oesophageal adenocarcinoma after initially experiencing difficulty swallowing food. The glazier was told he has approximately nine months to live following the discovery of a tumour covering 75% of his oesophagus, which has spread to his lungs, throat, liver, and right adrenal gland.
Initial Symptoms and Diagnosis
In February, John began having trouble swallowing, which led to a weight loss of three stone in just two and a half months and unbearable chest pain. After consulting his GP, he was fast-tracked for an endoscopy, which revealed a bleed and a significant tumour. Subsequent CT scans and biopsies confirmed stage four cancer.
John told the Daily Record: "It was the most devastating, world-crushing news. My world fell apart. My kids don't deserve to lose their dad so young." He expressed heartbreak over missing milestones like walking his daughters down the aisle or watching his son grow up.
Impact on Family
John and his wife Nicole, 29, have been together for 11 years. Their children are Jorja, 15, Paris-Cole, eight, and Clay-Ty, four. "A future with my wife has been stolen from me," he said. Despite his appearance of good health, doctors have told him he will look the same until the end, aside from becoming paler and thinner.
Medical professionals indicated the cancer likely developed over years, and earlier detection was improbable due to late symptom onset. John is currently on a liquid diet and preparing to start chemotherapy, with a feeding tube under consideration.
Fundraising for Treatment
John has launched a fundraising appeal to cover private treatment and clinical trials not available on the NHS, including potential trials in Germany and London. Funds will also create lasting memories with his family. "We're trying to cram a lifetime of experiences into a few months," he said. He is writing cards and recording video messages for future celebrations.
