Hospice Patient Derek Kelly Discharged Home After Six Weeks

Derek Kelly, a patient at Moya Cole Hospice diagnosed with bile duct cancer, has been discharged to his home after a six-week inpatient stay. His condition improved significantly following treatment, allowing him to return to his family.

Critical Condition Upon Admission

Before being admitted to the hospice, Derek was found unconscious in his bathroom by his wife, Pamela, due to an infection. “I don’t know what happened,” Derek said. “I got up at 4am to go to the toilet, and then I woke up here.” He added, “I was in a bad way, and my family were told that I might not survive.”

Recovery and Discharge

Despite the grim prognosis, ongoing treatment at Moya Cole Hospice stabilized Derek’s condition. “All I’ve wanted to do is be able to go home. The staff here are amazing, but I’ve been adamant about returning home since I’ve been here. Thanks to the staff, I’m able to do that,” he said. His home required modifications, including converting a downstairs room into a hospital-style space. “I’m excited but apprehensive about being at home, a lot has had to change. They’ve converted a room downstairs into a sort of hospital room for me. I won’t be able to go upstairs anymore as it is no longer safe.”
