Life Leisure Expands Active Hospital Initiative at Stepping Hill Hospital
Life Leisure is building on its Active Hospital initiative to help patients increase physical activity, improve their wellbeing, and transition smoothly into community-based health programs. This ongoing effort is now being implemented at Stepping Hill Hospital, operated by Stockport NHS Foundation Trust, with regular engagement activities.
Collaborative Leadership and Goals
The initiative is spearheaded by Lisa Arrandale, who leads the Active Hospital work for Life Leisure, in close partnership with Jan Sinclair, the hospital's lead for the Active Hospital project. Together, they aim to make physical activity feel accessible and natural rather than obligatory, while establishing clear and supportive pathways for long-term health improvement.
Introduction of Active Hospital Kit Bags
A significant component of this early phase is the rollout of Active Hospital kit bags, which are now available on wards at Stepping Hill Hospital. These kits are designed to facilitate simple, low-impact movements for patients. Each kit currently includes:
- A pedal exerciser
- A resistance band
- A pedometer
Plans are in place to add more items to the kits over time. The primary goal is to enable patients to move safely and confidently during their hospital stay. Hospital staff have already been actively engaging with and supporting the use of these kit bags.
Additionally, each kit bag contains a practical folder with:
- Simple exercise ideas
- Information on Life Leisure community sessions
- Details about the Active Pathways program, which offers support and guidance for individuals beginning their journey toward a more active lifestyle
Weekly Sessions and Broader Partnerships
Life Leisure already conducts three weekly sessions at the hospital:
- Tai Chi sessions for staff
- Two low-impact exercise classes on Norbury and Arden wards
These sessions are part of a wider collaborative approach through the Active Pathways steering group, which includes organizations such as BOOST and Stockport County FC. These partners also deliver activity sessions on the wards, enhancing the program's reach and impact.
Connecting Hospital and Community Activity
A key objective of the Active Pathways initiative is to bridge hospital-based activities with community provisions. By raising awareness among hospital staff about these pathways, Life Leisure aims to simplify the transition for patients and colleagues from ward-based sessions to community classes. Often, patients can continue with the same providers they connected with during their hospital stay, ensuring continuity of care and support.
Future Developments and Long-Term Vision
This initiative represents the beginning of a sustained presence at Stepping Hill Hospital. Looking ahead to 2026, Life Leisure plans to further develop its role within the hospital by building stronger relationships, incorporating feedback, and tailoring support to meet the needs of both patients and staff. The underlying philosophy is that when movement is supported and encouraged, it is more likely to become a lasting habit.
Stepping Hill Hospital is located in Stockport, Greater Manchester, serving as a key site for this innovative health and wellbeing program.
