Drop-in support available without an appointment
Stepping Hill Hospital in Stockport has officially opened its new Macmillan Cancer Support Centre, providing a dedicated drop-in space for anyone affected by cancer. The centre is now welcoming visitors from across Stockport and the High Peak, offering a range of support services in a calm and accessible location on the hospital campus.
The centre operates on a walk-in basis, meaning no appointment is necessary. It is open Monday to Friday from 10am to 4pm, and is situated between the rear entrance of the Medical and Surgical Building and Outpatients Department C. Signposts have been placed across the hospital site to guide visitors to the new facility.
Whether someone is currently undergoing treatment, supporting a loved one, or adjusting to life after cancer, the centre is designed to be a welcoming first port of call. Visitors can access information, speak to trained staff, and find out about services available in their local area.
Personalised information and guidance
Inside the centre, a range of information resources is available covering many aspects of the cancer journey, from diagnosis and treatment to practical issues such as benefits, work and financial help. The on-site team can help visitors navigate these resources and connect them with local services and organisations that offer additional support.
The service aims to provide personalised advice, recognising that every person’s experience of cancer is different. In addition to patients themselves, the centre is open to family members, friends and carers who may need support or information to help someone they care about.
Designed to put people at ease
The centre has been designed by Arcadis, an international design and engineering consultancy, with a strong focus on creating a welcoming and calming atmosphere. Maximising natural light and incorporating elements inspired by nature, the space is intended to promote a sense of comfort and wellbeing for everyone who uses it.
From the choice of materials and colours to the layout of seating areas, every detail has been considered with the aim of reducing stress and making visitors feel at ease. The design reflects wider thinking in healthcare environments, recognising that physical surroundings can play a significant role in how people feel during difficult times.
Community activities and partnerships on the horizon
While the centre is currently based at Stepping Hill Hospital, the team has ambitious plans to expand its reach into the community. Over time, the service will develop community-based activities and partnerships with local groups, helping more people access support closer to where they live.
Planned events include coffee mornings, wellbeing sessions and visits from partner organisations such as Citizens Advice, which can offer expert guidance on a range of issues. These activities aim to build a wider support network for people affected by cancer across Stockport and the High Peak.
Centre manager Joe Wiecha welcomes first visitors
Joe Wiecha, the Macmillan Cancer Support Centre manager, spoke of his pride as the centre admitted its first visitors. He said: “It’s been fantastic for the centre to finally open and welcome our very first visitors. “Whoever you are, and whatever your experience of cancer, you will always receive a warm welcome at our centre. “Whether you're living with cancer, supporting a family member or friend, or adjusting to life beyond treatment, our team is here to listen, support you, and help you access the information, services, and guidance you need.”
