Wayne Domeney, a convicted paedophile who claimed to have connections with the British Royal Family, died of pneumonia in his prison cell on New Year's Eve 2024, according to a report by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman. The 58-year-old former paratrooper was serving a 17-year sentence for sexual offences including rape and causing a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity.

Domeney, originally from Bulkington, Nuneaton, was convicted in absentia at Warwick Crown Court after going on the run during his five-day trial. He handed himself in at a police station in Hampshire two weeks later, triggering a major manhunt. He claimed to have served with Prince Harry, trained Prince William, given Princess Diana a tour of Bosnian minefields, and drunk Guinness with King Charles, as reported by the Mirror.
Prison Death and Ombudsman Findings
Domeney died at HMP Isle of Wight in Newport. The ombudsman's report, published recently, stated the cause of death as pneumonia with left-sided pleural empyema. The clinical care he received was not of the required standard and not equivalent to what he could have expected in the community, according to an independent clinical reviewer.
The reviewer found a lack of documented mental health assessment when Domeney began to self-neglect in his final week. There were also knowledge and training gaps among healthcare staff regarding procedures when prisoners decline healthcare appointments, and a lack of escalation to senior clinicians.
Recommendations
The ombudsman recommended that the Head of Healthcare at HMP Isle of Wight review local policies and training needs to ensure staff understand their roles when prisoners neglect their health, including timely assessments and referrals to safeguard prisoners and escalation to senior clinicians.
An inquest into Domeney's death concluded on 11 May 2026, recording a verdict of natural causes.
