Aston Villa midfielder Amadou Onana has undergone surgery on a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and is expected to be sidelined for nine months, according to reports from Agence France-Presse via L'Equipe.
Surgery in Lyon
The 24-year-old Belgian international had the operation on Tuesday at the Jean-Mermoz Private Hospital in Lyon, performed by renowned surgeon Dr. Bertrand Sonnery-Cottet. Onana sustained the injury during Belgium's 4-1 victory over the United States in the World Cup round of 16, when he was forced off midway through the first half.
Injury Confirmed
Belgium team doctor Brahim Hacene confirmed earlier this month that Onana had suffered a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament. The midfielder was subsequently seen on crutches and wearing a brace on his right knee.
Compensation for Villa
Aston Villa will receive a multi-million pound compensation payout from FIFA under the Club Protection Programme, which covers players injured while on international duty. The club had signed Onana from Everton for £50 million in the summer transfer window.
