Southport Macmillan Centre: A Hub for Cancer Support and Community Events

Located at 29 Wright Street in Southport, the Southport Macmillan Centre serves as a vital community cancer centre, providing a welcoming and non-clinical environment for individuals affected by cancer. With a main room designed for group meetings in a relaxed atmosphere and private spaces for confidential conversations, the centre aims to offer personalised care beyond a diagnosis.

Upcoming Events and New Initiatives

In the coming weeks, the centre will host a Coffee and Chat afternoon at 2pm on March 4, featuring a visit from Healthwatch Sefton. This event invites community members to share feedback on their experiences with local healthcare services, fostering open dialogue and improvement.

Additionally, a new course titled Positive Steps will commence on March 2 at 2pm, targeting individuals living with long-term side-effects from cancer or its treatments. The course will explore strategies to enhance wellbeing, addressing common challenges such as sleep problems, anxiety, pain, and other difficulties. Those interested in attending are encouraged to contact the centre for more details.

Community Activities and Health Programmes

The centre's Walking Group is set to embrace the start of spring with a special outing on Friday, March 27, around the Sands Boardwalk in Ainsdale. For regular participants, the group meets every Tuesday at 10.30am outside the Atkinson for an hour-long walk around Southport, promoting physical activity and social connection.

Furthermore, the centre is highlighting the upcoming Lung Cancer Screening Programme in Southport. Individuals aged between 55 and 75 who are current or former smokers may receive invitations via text or letter from their GP surgery for screening appointments. This NHS initiative aims to detect cancer at earlier, more treatable stages. For more information, contact 0151 254 3032 or visit the relevant NHS website.

Beyond events, the Southport Macmillan Centre offers a range of support services, including exercise programmes, in-house counselling, and various support groups. The centre is open for drop-in visits from Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm, providing accessible assistance to the community.
