Harrogate Care Home Makes Generous Donation to Local Charity
A care home in Harrogate has made a significant contribution to a local charity dedicated to supporting older people who are at risk of loneliness and isolation across the region. Hampden House, which is part of the not-for-profit social care provider HICA Group, has donated £1,000 to Supporting Older People (SOP). This charity, based in Harrogate and Knaresborough, offers befriending services, social activities, and community support to help older residents stay connected and engaged.
Enhancing Community Connections
Supporting Older People assists more than 300 individuals at any given time through a combination of volunteer-led services and small-group activities. These initiatives are specifically designed to build meaningful connections and reduce feelings of isolation among the elderly population. Laura Newall, the home manager at Hampden House, emphasized the importance of this work, stating: "We see every day how important connection and companionship are for older people."
She added: "Working with a local charity like Supporting Older People felt like a natural fit for us, as their work complements what we do within the home and extends that support into the wider community. We wanted to back an organisation that is making a clear difference locally, particularly for people who may be living alone and at risk of becoming isolated."
Supporting Vital Services
The donation from Hampden House will directly contribute to the charity's ongoing efforts in Harrogate and the surrounding areas. This includes funding for their befriending service and regular social groups, which are crucial in combating loneliness. Julia Lightfoot, the befriending manager at Supporting Older People, highlighted the impact of such support: "Support from local organisations like Hampden House plays an important role in helping us continue and expand our services."
She further explained: "Demand for support remains high, and contributions like this allow us to reach more older people who may otherwise feel isolated. Our befriending service in particular relies on sustained funding and volunteer support, so partnerships with local care providers are vital in helping us respond to need across the area."
A Legacy of Community Care
Supporting Older People has been actively serving the Harrogate and Knaresborough district for over 40 years. Throughout this time, the charity has focused on reducing loneliness and helping older individuals remain connected to their communities. This long-standing commitment underscores the importance of local initiatives in addressing social isolation among the elderly.
The collaboration between Hampden House and Supporting Older People exemplifies how community partnerships can enhance the well-being of older residents, ensuring they receive the support and companionship needed to thrive.
