Emergency crews in Athens have recovered six bodies from the rubble of a residential building in the historic Plaka district after a devastating explosion on Friday morning, according to Greek state broadcaster ERT. A British pensioner and his Greek wife, both reportedly in their 70s, are feared to be among the dead, having lived on the second floor of the property overlooking Hadrian's Gate.

The blast tore through the building in the shadow of the Acropolis, reducing it to a pile of masonry and debris. Rescue teams worked through the day amid scenes of destruction. ERT reported that American tourists staying in a short-term rental on the ground floor were also among the deceased.
Athens mayor Haris Doukas said investigators believe the explosion was caused by a major gas leak. Three further individuals sustained injuries in the blast, while neighbouring buildings required evacuation after suffering structural damage. Vehicles in the vicinity were also struck, with footage from the scene showing cars buried beneath debris.

A spokesperson for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said: "We are aware of a suspected explosion in Athens and are in touch with the local authorities. We stand ready to offer assistance to British nationals abroad 24/7."
