DWP Announces £100 Increase in Winter Fuel Payments for Older Pensioners

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed a significant boost to Winter Fuel Payments, with older state pensioners set to receive an additional £100. This announcement comes alongside the release of new eligibility criteria for the upcoming 2026-27 winter season, jointly issued by the Labour Party government and the DWP.

New Payment Structure and Eligibility Details

Under the revised scheme, individuals who live alone or with no other eligible persons will receive either £200 if born between 28 September 1946 and 27 June 1960, or £300 if born before 28 September 1946. The amount is determined based on birth dates and personal circumstances during the qualifying week of 21 to 27 September 2026.

Eligible recipients can expect to receive notification letters in October or November 2026, detailing their specific payment amounts. Those who do not receive a letter but believe they qualify are advised to check whether they need to submit a claim. Importantly, these payments will not impact other benefit entitlements.

Reactions from Advocacy Groups

Amy Dodge, Head of Influencing at Independent Age, expressed cautious optimism about the changes. "We welcome the Prime Minister's announcement on the Winter Fuel Payment today," she stated. "Linking the entitlement to Pension Credit was misguided, and meant far too many older people on low incomes fell through the cracks."

Dodge further explained that since the initial changes were announced in July 2025, her organization has been advocating for broader eligibility criteria to support more older individuals facing financial hardship. "While this news will bring some relief to older people on a low income who lost the Winter Fuel Payment, there will still be a period of uncertainty and anxiety until details about who is eligible are clearly announced and detailed," she added.

Addressing Ongoing Concerns

Highlighting the broader economic context, Dodge emphasized the urgent need for clarity. "At a time when higher bills and rising inflation are stretching budgets to breaking point, older people on low incomes need reassurance that they will be supported to heat their home next winter and beyond," she said. "The UK Government must provide clarity and act now. We can't have a repeat of last winter where millions of older people were left in the cold."

This policy adjustment aims to provide enhanced support during the colder months, addressing concerns about energy affordability for vulnerable pensioners. The DWP and government officials are expected to release further guidance in the coming months to ensure smooth implementation.
