NHS Trust Honours Research Midwives on International Day

Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust is celebrating its dedicated research midwives to mark International Day of the Midwife today (May 5). These specialist teams are working hard to improve the safety and quality of care for parents and babies across the local area.

Rosie Nicol: A Hands-On Research Midwife

Rosie Nicol is a midwife at Broomfield Hospital who spends her time supporting families through life-changing moments while leading important clinical studies. While some might think research is just about paperwork, Rosie’s day-to-day work is hands-on and focuses entirely on the people she cares for.

Rosie said: “I spend my days on the wards, talking with those who may be eligible for studies, explaining what taking part involves, and supporting them if they choose to join. I make sure research fits naturally into their care.”

Her current work includes a national genetic screening project and a vital study into managing blood loss, which has already helped reduce the need for transfusions.

Nearly a Decade of Midwifery

Rosie has been a midwife for nearly ten years and believes that staying close to her patients is the most rewarding part of the job. She said: “I was just drawn to it; it always felt like something I’d be good at. I see research as a way to broaden my skills and stay close to the people I care for.”

The Trust currently employs more than 650 midwives who work across local hospitals and out in the community.

Trust Leadership Applauds Research Midwives

Paula Hollis, from Broomfield Hospital, said: “Our research midwives play a huge part in how our maternity services grow and improve. The research they support helps us deliver safer, better care, and I’m incredibly grateful for the dedication they bring to our families.”

The hospital also partners with Anglia Ruskin University to provide essential training placements for the next generation of student midwives. Anyone interested in starting a career in midwifery can find out more about local degree courses through the university website.

The Trust serves communities in Braintree, Chelmsford, Harlow, Loughton, Maldon, Farleigh, Castle Point, Rochford, Southend, Thurrock, Basildon, and Brentwood.
