Glamorous centenarian Phyllis Walker was treated to a spectacular surprise birthday party, complete with a personalised card from King Charles III and Queen Camilla, as she celebrated her 100th year at her Waltham Abbey care home.
A Day of Pampering and Surprises
Staff at Ashbrook Court Care Home on Sewardstone Road meticulously planned the festivities for their beloved resident. Knowing Phyllis's love for looking her best, they arranged pre-party pampering, with her hair styled by the in-house hairdresser and her nails painted perfectly. They even helped her select a special outfit for the occasion.
"I had a fantastic time with everyone," said Phyllis. "It was a wonderful surprise and a very special day. I felt very loved. I like to always look my best and I liked having my hair and makeup done but I didn't know I was getting dressed up for my own party!"
Music, Family, and a Royal Acknowledgment
The celebration was filled with music and dancing, which Phyllis credits as key to a long, happy life. Her favourite singer, Brandon, provided the entertainment. The party brought together her extensive family, including her two daughters Jackie and Marilyn, nine grandchildren, and one great-grandson, alongside friends and care home staff.
The thoughtful touches included balloons, a homemade cake, and the highlight: a congratulatory card from the King and Queen. "It was a wonderful day and we are so grateful to the team at Ashbrook Court for organising such a special party for Mum," said daughter Jackie. "It was brilliant to all be together."
A Lifetime of Glamour and Love
Phyllis, a resident at the 70-bedroom home for the past three years, was born in Shoreditch and later moved to Hackney Road. She was married to her husband George for 60 years and worked as a saleswoman, publican, and travel agent. Described by lifestyle coordinator Lorna Morey as "a warm ray of sunshine," Phyllis is known for her sociable nature and gentle greeting of "Hello dear."
Her daughters fondly recall a childhood filled with glamour. "She was always singing and dancing and loved to party. She was always so glamorous too and always looked lovely," said Jackie, reminiscing about shopping for party outfits and Easter bonnets.
The family chose Ashbrook Court based on a friend's recommendation and their own research, impressed by its friendliness and facilities. "It’s become our second home!" Jackie added, praising the home's strong family atmosphere where relatives are welcomed as part of the community.
