Dudley Nursery Owner Admits 'I Failed Noah' After Toddler's Tragic Death
The owner of a Dudley nursery where a 14-month-old toddler died has publicly admitted she 'failed him and his family' in an emotional letter submitted to the court. Deborah Latewood, who owned Fairytales Day Nursery on Bourne Street in Dudley, expressed deep remorse following the tragic incident that occurred on December 9, 2022.

Noah Sibanda, aged just 14 months, lost his life after being 'tightly' wrapped in a sleeping bag by nursery worker Kimberley Cookson. Cookson then placed the toddler face down inside a tepee and covered his head with a blanket. Shockingly, Cookson proceeded to put her leg over Noah for approximately seven minutes to restrain him before leaving the area.
Staff members at the nursery failed to conduct any physical checks on the child for a period of two hours. When they finally checked on Noah, he was no longer breathing and could not be revived.
Court Proceedings and Sentencing
In her heartfelt letter to Wolverhampton Crown Court, Latewood wrote: 'My sorry will never be enough, but I do feel it deeply. I have always loved the precious gift of trust in caring for a child. But I failed Noah and his family.'
Latewood received a six-month suspended sentence after pleading guilty to health and safety failures. She claimed during proceedings that she was unaware children were being put to sleep in such a dangerous manner at her nursery.
Kimberley Cookson was sentenced to three years and four months in prison after admitting to gross negligence manslaughter. Additionally, Fairytales Day Nursery Limited was fined £240,000 and ordered to pay £56,000 in costs after pleading guilty to corporate manslaughter charges.
