Anaya Khaanan, a 21-month-old toddler from Burnley, died from severe anaemia on July 22, 2025, at Royal Blackburn Hospital after being raised on a diet consisting predominantly of cow's milk, an inquest has concluded.
Cause of Death and Dietary Background
The inquest at Preston Coroners' Court on June 16, 2026, heard that Anaya, daughter of Mian Abdul Khaanan and Aneela Ikram of Redvers Street, developed anaemia because she was offered solid foods but could not consume enough to meet her iron needs. Her diet was primarily cow's milk-based, which is low in iron and can contribute to iron deficiency in young children.
Area Coroner Kate Bisset recorded a narrative conclusion, stating: "Anaya Khaanan died on the 22nd July 2025 at the Royal Blackburn hospital as a consequence of severe anaemia caused by a predominantly milk based diet." The coroner added that Anaya was offered solid foods but was unable to consume sufficient oral intake to meet her iron needs, particularly as her anaemia progressed and she became tired.
Medical History and Final Days
Anaya had been seen by a GP, who ordered blood tests, and she was also taken to an urgent treatment centre on July 10, 2025. On that date, she was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection, and no blood tests were undertaken because they were not clinically indicated by her presentation.
On the evening of July 21, Anaya's condition worsened, and she was rushed to Royal Blackburn Hospital. Medics determined she required a blood transfusion, but she deteriorated and died before the transfusion could be performed.
Inquest Findings and Coroner's Statement
The inquest was told that Anaya had been born in Pakistan. The cause of death was severe anaemia brought on by a milk-based diet. The coroner's narrative conclusion highlighted that Anaya had been seen by medical professionals but that blood tests were not performed at the urgent treatment centre visit, as a urinary tract infection diagnosis was made.
Coroner Bisset added: "Anaya became more unwell overnight between the 21st and 22nd July 2025 and was taken to hospital where plans were instigated for a blood transfusion to take place. Anaya deteriorated and died prior to the transfusion taking place."
Public Health Implications
Health experts warn that a diet too heavily reliant on cow's milk can lead to iron deficiency anaemia in toddlers, as milk is low in iron and can interfere with the absorption of iron from other foods. The NHS recommends that children over one year old should have no more than 300-400ml of milk per day and should be offered a variety of iron-rich foods such as meat, fortified cereals, and green vegetables.
The tragedy underscores the importance of monitoring iron intake in young children, especially those who are picky eaters or have difficulty transitioning to solid foods. Parents are advised to consult healthcare professionals if they have concerns about their child's diet or development.
