Harry's Inspiring Path to Employment with Seashell Trust Support
Harry, a 23-year-old with a unique genetic variation that causes profound learning disabilities, has defied expectations by securing a permanent paid position at The Light cinema in Stockport. His journey began with a two-year internship facilitated by the Seashell Trust, a local charity dedicated to transforming the lives of young people with complex disabilities.
Overcoming Challenges Through Specialized Education
Previously, Harry's family faced uncertainty about his future due to his condition. However, after attending Seashell's Royal College Manchester, he gained the skills and confidence needed for the workforce. "The course at Seashell is very unique. I just knew it was the right place for Harry," said his mother, Helen Clayton. The college's approach includes personalized support, such as having a support worker accompany students on placements, allowing them to explore work opportunities aligned with their interests.
Breaking Employment Barriers
Nicola Brown from Seashell highlighted the program's impact: "Student placements empower staff to understand complex disabilities and give them the confidence to work with anyone who may have additional needs." Remarkably, 15% of Seashell's leavers enter paid work, which is three times the national average for students with additional needs. This success is a testament to the charity's tailored Employability Programme, which partners with over 40 local businesses to create meaningful roles and improve workplace accessibility.
Thriving in the Workplace
At The Light Stockport, Harry has become a valued team member. Nicola Wood from the cinema shared: "The team and the guests love Harry, and he delivers all the values we want at The Light. He has the biggest smile on his face every shift, and he inspires all of us." His positive attitude and dedication have not only secured his own position but also paved the way for another Seashell student, Romany Dunn, to join the cinema and receive mentorship from Harry.
Expanding Opportunities Beyond the Cinema
In addition to his role at the cinema, Harry holds a paid position in the maintenance team at Seashell, where he performs essential tasks like cleaning minibuses, sweeping, and gardening. This dual employment showcases the breadth of opportunities available through Seashell's initiatives. The charity continues to seek partnerships with local businesses to support more individuals with disabilities.
