DWP Announces Significant PIP Payment Increase Effective April 6
The Department for Work and Pensions has confirmed a major shake-up to Personal Independence Payment rates, with claimants set to receive a substantial financial boost from April 6. This change represents a critical update to disability support, designed to help individuals manage the extra costs associated with long-term illness or disability.
New Payment Rates and Financial Impact
Under the new structure, the daily living component standard rate will increase to £76.70 per week, up from £73.90. The enhanced daily living rate rises to £114.60 from £110.40. Mobility components will be paid at a standard rate of £30.30 and an enhanced rate of £80.00.
This adjustment means claimants receiving both enhanced rates will now get £194 weekly, totaling over £10,000 annually. The combined increase of £3 in the mobility rate and £4 in the standard daily living component results in a weekly rise of £7.15, equating to an extra £371 per year for eligible individuals.
Eligibility and Claiming Process
Personal Independence Payment is available to those aged 16 to State Pension age who have a long-term physical or mental health condition or disability. Applicants must have experienced difficulties with everyday tasks or mobility for at least three months prior to claiming and expect these challenges to continue for at least nine months afterward.
New claims cannot be made once State Pension age is reached, though existing claimants can continue receiving benefits. To initiate a claim, contact the DWP at 0800 917 2222 (textphone: 0800 917 7777). In Northern Ireland, call the PIP Centre on 0800 012 1573 (textphone: 0800 012 1574).
Applications can be made by a representative if the claimant is present, and postal applications are available for those who find phone use difficult. This update underscores the government's commitment to supporting individuals with disabilities through enhanced financial assistance.
