The Met Office has escalated weather warnings to amber as Storm Claudia prepares to unleash torrential rain and potential flooding across large parts of Britain.
Immediate Impacts and Warning Details
From Friday at 12 noon, the amber warning comes into effect, covering central and southern England and Wales. The storm, previously named by the Spanish Meteorological Service, is expected to bring persistent heavy rainfall that could see some areas receiving up to a month's worth of rain within 24 hours.
Met Office Chief Meteorologist Matthew Lehnert confirmed the severity, stating: "Storm Claudia will bring very heavy rainfall to a large swathe of central and southern England and Wales on Friday into Saturday. Much of this will fall on saturated ground, increasing the chances of flooding."
Expected Rainfall and Flood Risks
The weather agency predicts widespread rainfall of 40-60mm across the warning area, with some locations potentially seeing around 80mm. The highest accumulations, potentially exceeding 150mm, are more probable across the East Midlands, and higher ground in Wales and western England.
Additional hazards include strong easterly winds that may exacerbate impacts, along with thunderstorms expected later on Friday afternoon and evening. In northwest England and northwest Wales, gusty winds could reach 60-70mph in exposed places.
Public Safety Advice and Preparedness
The Met Office is urging residents across England and Wales to take immediate precautions. Their advice includes preparing a flood kit containing essential items:
- Insurance and important documents
- Torch and spare batteries
- First aid kit, prescription medicines and pet supplies
- Warm waterproof clothing, blankets, food and water
The agency emphasised that being prepared could significantly reduce loss or damage to homes and businesses from potential flooding caused by Storm Claudia's intense rainfall.
