The Met Office has raised the alarm over a significant ice risk set to grip the Midlands over the next 24 hours, prompting the issuance of an official yellow weather warning. Residents across a wide swathe of the region are being urged to exercise extreme caution on roads and pavements.
Details of the Met Office Warning
The national forecaster confirmed that the yellow alert for ice will be active from midday on Friday, January 9, until midday on Saturday, January 10, 2026. The primary cause of the hazardous conditions is expected to be partially thawed snow refreezing overnight as temperatures plunge below zero.
"Partially thawed snow during Friday will likely freeze overnight as temperatures fall below freezing, leading to a widespread ice risk," a Met Office spokesperson stated. The situation could be further exacerbated by freezing fog patches forming in some areas, creating an additional, invisible threat on surfaces.
Additional Wintry Hazards Expected
While the main concern is black ice from refreezing slush, the forecast also indicates the potential for further disruption. The Met Office noted that wintry showers may continue to feed into parts of Wales and possibly the West Midlands. Any new precipitation falling onto already frozen ground would instantly turn to ice, significantly increasing the danger.
"Whilst there is some uncertainty as to the extent of any precipitation, this falling onto frozen surfaces may also add to the risk of ice," the forecaster added, advising the public to stay updated with the latest local forecasts.
