Midlands Braces for 13-Hour Snow and Ice Alert This Weekend

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for snow and ice across the Midlands, with heavy snowfall expected to hit the region this weekend. The alert will be in effect from 9pm on Saturday, February 14, until 10am on Sunday, February 15, spanning a total of 13 hours.

Potential for Significant Snow Accumulation

According to the Met Office, snowfall could be 'heavy' at times, leading to possible travel disruption. Temporary snow accumulations of 1-3cm are anticipated at low levels, with 3-7cm possible above approximately 150 meters elevation. In areas above 400 meters, accumulations could reach 10-15cm.

The Met Office stated: "Outbreaks of rain spreading eastwards on Saturday night will fall as snow initially, even to low levels for a time, before becoming confined to higher ground as milder air arrives from the west."

Ice Hazard and Regional Impacts

Ice will pose an additional hazard, particularly in northeast England and parts of Scotland where precipitation may fall on frozen ground, creating very slippery conditions. Areas sheltered to the north of high ground in the Midlands may see very little snow.

The warning affects multiple UK regions and local authorities, including:

  • Central, Tayside & Fife
  • East Midlands
  • Grampian
  • Highlands & Eilean Siar
  • North East England
  • North West England
  • SW Scotland, Lothian Borders
  • Strathclyde
  • West Midlands
  • Yorkshire & Humber

Specific areas in the West Midlands, such as Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent, are included in the alert. Residents are advised to prepare for potential travel delays and hazardous conditions during this period.
