Storm Goretti: National Grid Warns West Midlands as -12.5C and 20cm Snow Forecast
National Grid urges West Midlands to prepare for Storm Goretti

Residents across the West Midlands are being urged to prepare for potential power cuts as Storm Goretti is set to batter the UK with extreme winter conditions from Thursday evening.

Severe Weather Warnings Issued

National Grid Electricity Distribution has issued a direct appeal to customers, warning that the storm could bring up to 20cm of snow, ice, and freezing temperatures as low as -12.5C. Forecasters predict a dangerous mix of heavy rain and snow, which is expected to sweep across the region.

The electricity network operator emphasised that while its infrastructure is built to be resilient, the forecasted extreme weather poses a significant threat. High winds may damage equipment, and the intense cold risks ice forming on overhead power lines. This added weight can lead to faults and disruptions to the power supply.

Emergency Teams on Standby

To combat the storm's impact, National Grid has confirmed it has extra teams on standby to respond to any incidents. Its control centre will operate 24/7 to manage supplies and coordinate a rapid response where needed.

Roisin Quinn, Field Operations Director at National Grid Electricity Distribution, stated: "We understand how worrying severe weather can be. That’s why our engineers, contact centre staff, and welfare teams are ready to support you, whatever the storm brings."

She added that staffing has been increased across engineering and customer contact teams to ensure a swift response and to keep the public informed. The key message for anyone experiencing a power cut is to call the free emergency number 105.

Official Checklist for Households

National Grid has published a power cuts checklist to help households get ready for potential outages:

  • Keep the emergency number handy – Call 105 to report a power cut, 24 hours a day.
  • Prepare your home – Have a torch and a fully charged mobile phone ready. Keep an external battery pack to recharge devices and consider a wind-up or battery-powered radio for updates. Use surge protectors for sensitive equipment and keep non-perishable food available.
  • Check on others – Monitor weather forecasts and check if neighbours, especially vulnerable ones, need any assistance.
  • Get extra support – Sign up for the free Priority Services Register for tailored support if you are vulnerable.

With Storm Goretti's arrival imminent, authorities are stressing the importance of being prepared for what could be a severe and disruptive period of winter weather.
