Met Office Issues 14-Hour Snow Warning for Birmingham and West Midlands
The Met Office has issued a significant yellow snow warning that will affect large parts of the West Midlands, including Birmingham and the Black Country, as well as most of Wales. This alert is set to be in effect for a 14-hour period, starting at 4pm on Wednesday, February 18, and lasting until 6am on Thursday, February 19.
Expected Weather Conditions and Potential Impacts
According to the national weather agency, there is potential for an area of rain and snow to impact parts of Wales and central England during this timeframe. The Met Office has indicated that two to five centimetres of snow could accumulate widely above elevations of 150 to 200 metres. In mid and southeast Wales, along with Herefordshire and Shropshire, accumulations could reach as high as ten to 15 centimetres above 250 to 300 metres.
Even at lower elevations, some small accumulations of snow, typically less than two centimetres, are possible, especially from later Wednesday evening into the early hours of Thursday. Strong east to north-easterly winds are expected to accompany the wet weather, which could exacerbate impacts in various locations.
Travel Disruptions and Safety Concerns
The Met Office has warned of several potential disruptions due to the incoming weather. There is a small chance of travel delays on roads, with some vehicles and passengers becoming stranded. Rail and air travel may also experience delays or cancellations. In more rural areas, there is a slight chance that communities could become cut off temporarily.
Additionally, there is a small chance that power cuts could occur, and other essential services, such as mobile phone coverage, may be affected. Residents are advised to stay updated with the latest weather forecasts and travel information.
Specific Forecast for Birmingham and Surrounding Areas
The alert covers the West Midlands conurbation extensively, including Birmingham, the Black Country, Solihull, Coventry, and surrounding areas. According to the Birmingham BBC weather forecast, rain and sleet are expected to hit the region from around 6pm on Wednesday, continuing until approximately 9am on Thursday, when it will transition to just rain.
Temperatures in Birmingham are predicted to hover just above freezing, at two or three degrees Celsius. While this might mean the city avoids disruptive snow, there remains a chance of it causing problems, particularly in higher elevations or during peak snowfall periods.
Geographical Coverage of the Warning
The snow warning includes a broad area beyond Birmingham, encompassing Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Worcestershire, Shropshire, Herefordshire, and Telford and Wrekin in the West Midlands, as well as Gloucestershire in the South West. It extends as far east as Oxfordshire but does not reach into the east of England or the North West. Notably, most of Wales is also covered under this alert.
Further south, a separate yellow rain warning is in place for the entire south coast from Cornwall to Kent, from 6am on Wednesday to 8am on Thursday. Temperatures in these southern regions are expected to be higher than in the Midlands and Wales, reducing the likelihood of snow but increasing the risk of heavy rainfall.
Residents across the affected areas are urged to take necessary precautions, monitor local updates, and plan their travel accordingly to minimise any potential disruptions caused by this winter weather event.
