State pensioners born before 1956 have been issued a fresh warning regarding their DVLA driving licence. Motorists typically renew their licence every ten years, but this period reduces to three years once they reach a certain age.
Renewal Rules for Over 70s
The DVLA states that drivers aged 70 and over must renew their licence every three years to remain legally on the road. Darren Miller, a motoring specialist from BigWantsYourCar.com, emphasised the importance of this process. He said: “With more people driving later in life, it is essential that the system keeps pace with modern road use. Regular checks and honest self-assessment are key to ensuring that everyone remains safe behind the wheel.”
Medical Conditions and Driving
Darren added: “Many people assume giving up their licence is something that only happens at a certain age, but that simply is not the case. It is about your ability to drive safely, not your age. Medical conditions can develop at any stage of life, and some can significantly impact reaction times, vision, or awareness. Recognising those changes early is essential for staying safe on the road.”
He further noted: “For many drivers, the idea of losing their licence feels permanent, but in some cases it is not. If your health improves and you meet the required standards again, there is often a pathway back to driving.”
What Happens at Age 70
Driving licences expire at 70 years of age. When you reach 70, you need to renew your driving licence if you wish to continue driving. You must then renew it every three years thereafter. The DVLA (or the DVA in Northern Ireland) will send you a reminder and an application form to renew your licence as your 70th birthday approaches and then every three years when your licence is due for renewal.
Penalties for Non-Renewal
If you do not renew your licence, you will not legally be allowed to drive after your 70th birthday. If you carry on driving, your driving licence and motor insurance would not be valid, and you would be committing a serious offence carrying stringent penalties, which could include a heavy fine and having your car seized by the police.
When you receive your new licence, do not forget to dispose of your expired licence and keep the new one in a safe place.
