Three Seriously Injured and Four Arrested Following Major Shirley Collision
A severe three-car collision in the centre of Shirley has resulted in three individuals sustaining serious injuries and four arrests by West Midlands Police. The incident occurred on Stratford Road just after 10pm on Saturday, prompting a large-scale emergency response.
Emergency Services Rush to the Scene
All emergency services were dispatched to the scene following reports of multiple vehicles crashing into each other. Paramedics provided immediate treatment to a 41-year-old woman and two men, aged 38 and 22, for potentially serious injuries before transporting them to hospital, where they remain under care. The 22-year-old man is still receiving treatment, highlighting the severity of the incident.
Arrests Made in Connection with the Crash
West Midlands Police have confirmed the arrest of two men, aged 23 and 22, on suspicion of dangerous driving related to the collision. Additionally, an 18-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy were detained on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker, adding a concerning dimension to the event. The 23-year-old man has been taken into custody as investigations continue.
Fire Service Involvement and Local Reaction
West Midlands Fire Service sent three crews to the incident at 10.15pm, with operations concluding at 11.30pm when the scene was handed over to police. Local Councillor Prish Sharma expressed frustration, stating, "Another nasty crash on A34 in Shirley. Why aren't there speed cameras there in the residential/commercial areas? I have been lobbying Solihull Council for the last two years." He emphasized the need for speed calming measures to prevent such incidents and reduce the burden on emergency services and NHS resources.
The collision has sparked renewed calls for improved road safety measures along the A34 corridor, from the motorway junction through Hall Green, to address what Councillor Sharma described as "idiotic activity" leading to dangerous driving and serious accidents.
