The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has confirmed that a member of the UK armed forces died in a road traffic incident in Ukraine on Saturday. In an announcement posted on X, the MoD stated that the individual was killed in a collision, and it is believed the incident was not the result of hostile activity.
The serviceperson's family has been notified and has requested additional time before further details are disclosed. The MoD's statement expressed condolences, saying: "Our thoughts and our sympathies are with the individual's loved ones at this difficult time."
The small contingent of British personnel stationed in Ukraine provides security to diplomats and assistance to Ukraine's armed forces.
Context of the Incident
The death comes as Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine continues into its fifth year. Fresh strikes have targeted Ukraine, including an attack on a gas works and a drone strike on a railway station on Sunday.
The assault struck a train at Yahodyn station, situated on the Polish border, shortly after a train carrying former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson had departed ahead of schedule. Ukraine's railway operator suggested the strike may have been intended for the train transporting Johnson, alongside other dignitaries.

Johnson had been travelling back from a major conference in Kyiv, accompanied by former Swedish prime minister Carl Bildt and several European security advisers. Based on a translation from Ukrainian, rail operator Ukrzaliznytsia stated in a Telegram post that it was "quite possible" that the drone had been aimed at Johnson's train.
The MoD has not released further details about the deceased serviceperson, pending the family's request for privacy. The incident is under investigation by Ukrainian authorities and UK officials.
