The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed that older state pensioners born before September 28, 1946, will receive a £300 Winter Fuel Payment this year. Eligible individuals will receive a letter in October or November detailing the amount they will get, based on their birth date and circumstances between 21 and 27 September 2026.
The payment will not affect other benefits. However, if the recipient's income exceeds £35,000, HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) will reclaim the payment by adjusting the tax code or adding the amount to the Self Assessment tax return.
Payment amounts for different circumstances
For those living alone or with someone not eligible for the payment, the amount is £200 for those born between 28 September 1946 and 27 June 1960, and £300 for those born before 28 September 1946. If living with another eligible person, the payment may differ if either receives Pension Credit, Universal Credit, or income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA).
- If neither receives these benefits, payments are: £100 if both were born between 28 September 1946 and 27 June 1960; £100 if one was born between those dates and the other before 28 September 1946; £200 if the recipient was born before 28 September 1946 and the other person between 28 September 1946 and 27 June 1960; or £150 if both were born before 28 September 1946.
- If the couple jointly claims any of these benefits, one will receive £200 if both were born between 28 September 1946 and 27 June 1960, or £300 if one or both were born before 28 September 1946.
- If an individual receives benefits (not as part of a joint claim), they will get £200 if born between 28 September 1946 and 27 June 1960, or £300 if born before 28 September 1946.
